Correspondence with Richard Gladman, Sailing NZ

Jim :-

"I own an elderly Cherub, a Farr design, Queenie SJB.

Rumour has it that the boat was originally rigged as a Q class and
won two Q Class Nationals. Any idea if there's any truth in that, or was
it just a case of same name, different boat?

What I do know is that it came to the UK for the 74 Worlds, sailed by two
brothers called Paterson, and came 3rd to Amanda Wilmot and Nicola
Bethwaite in the Worlds..."

Richard:-

QSJB is a very famous Cherub. She was sailed by Mark Patterson, who was a top P-class skipper, winning both the Tauranga and Tanner Cups (Russell Coutts couldn't even do that!!). I don't know about the boat being originally rigged as a Q-class. Certainly she would have sailed in that mode - but most of the Cherubs of that time did also sail as Q-class. Some put bigger rigs on, others just sailed with their Cherub rigs. If it was at the start of the season, and stronger winds, then the Cherub rig would double as a #2 or #3.

I'm not too sure who Mark's crew would have been in the Worlds. he normally sailed with Brett Bennett. After '74 they got into a 470 and went onto represent NZ at the '76 Olympics. They didn't do that well, but had a bit of bad luck along the way.

Now Mark is a Pharmacist/Chemist with his own business in Auckland. I haven't seen him on the sailing scene for a while. But he is a very nice, extremely talented guy. A real thinker.
