Construction 1 (Interior)

Construction (Introduction)

Between the chine and stringer the second skin is cut away in neat "arches". Because of the layers of glass fibre that needed to reinforce the area after the Wave at Weston its difficult to make these out in a photograph, so I've highlighted them in red.

Looking into the forward part of the crew cockpit you can see considerable reinforcement on the 3mm topsides. For instance there's a small beam running down the topside from the shroud anchorage to the chine (which the shroud plate is of course bolted into) and a ply backing plate to that to reinforce the topside You can also just see a horizontal band along the topside, which is a narrow glass fibre strip that goes all the way along the topside at half height in the inside for reinforcement.Another topside frame runs from just in front of the centreboard brace up the topsides, while another braces the beam supporting the sidedeck and also triangulates the area.

Looking at the aft side of the crew area the large beam which provides the main horizontal support between the chines and stringers can be seen, whilst above it is the radiused traveller with its own beam underneath. This beam is actually made from two pieces of timber , laminated with a vertical division, so that it stays in shape. The traveller is a nuisance sailing, although its not quite as bad as I had anticipated. Modern cockpit layouts without all the extra hardware are definitely preferable in such a small boat though. As can be seen there are two stringers each side of the keel. This was reasonably convenrional in New Zealand at the time, although some boats had three stringers and a single ply skin. The detail layout of the stringers and transverse frames is quite different from the original Farr drawings.
